New ESL Teacher Joins MDL School
Kristine Fry arrived at The Lighthouse last month to serve as an English teacher at the Maison de Lumier school. As a licensed teacher in the state of Nebraska, Kristine has over seven years teaching experience as well as ESL and ELL certification and experience. She will be putting her skills and expertise to good use as she serves the teachers and students at MDL school over the next year.
Kristine is no stranger to Haiti. She has been part of teams from her church visiting Haiti since 2007. After her last trip in July 2012, Kristine sensed the Lord leading her to a greater commitment. Teaching English abroad had always been a cherished goal, and teaching people she knew and loved in Haiti seemed the right place.
Kristine is already hard at work. During the academic year, she will be providing special in-depth English instruction to MDL teachers every Friday. During the week, she will be teaching English to MDL students in a range of classes. English will be part of each day’s activities for the kindergartners. Other grades will receive an hour instruction each week. Kristine will also be helping with one special needs student.
Kristine has begun establishing various learning stations within the class to accommodate the various skill levels among the students. “The mixture of English language competency levels in each class is especially challenging,” noted Kristine. “The MDL (orphanage) kids are quite experienced and the neighborhood kids have much less experience.”
Kristine reports that her favorite moments so far include rooftop conversations with the girls at the girls home and having some of the little girls teach her how to do laundry the Haitian way. Her biggest challenge has been adjusting to the heat.
Kristine asks for prayer that she will be able to learn Creole quickly and that her relationships with the older girls would grow and deepen. We are very grateful to the Lord for sending Kristine to be one of His lights at The Lighthouse!
