The people of Haiti have been protesting for over a year. The central issue is corruption – $2 billion of foreign aid that was misused, misappropriated, or embezzled by government officials. Other issues like a fuel crisis and inflation of the Gourde are byproducts of the corruption.
Schools and businesses have been closed, roadblocks made from burning tires have halted travel, and gunshots can be heard daily. Many people have lost their lives. The opposition party thrives on this chaos, and so has been using gangs to incite more disruption.
At Child Hope we have thankfully been able to prepare. We are using more solar energy than ever before, reducing our need for diesel to power our generators. We are stocked with dry goods and drinking water for 2 weeks. When “quiet days” are announced, our staff goes out to restock. The kids are well taken care of and are safe. But we are all ready for life to return to normal – for the kids to be back in school, for our staff to be able to leave their homes and feel safe during their commute to work, and *hopefully* for prices to stabilize so people can afford the essentials like food and gas.
