Last week the kids took school exams, which usually signifies the end of the school year and start of summer vacation. However, due to the pandemic and so much missed learning, schools in Haiti have proposed students keep studying through August to make up for lost time. With “stay at home” orders, this looks a bit different than usual.
Many families in Haiti have a smartphone but not a computer or email, so WhatsApp has been the best form of communication. The teachers will send assignments via WhatsApp, and the children send a photo of their completed work back to their teacher.
The children at Maison de Lumiere are able to do some of their lessons online, crowded around the computer monitor. Our older kids have been teaching English classes for the younger kids and proctoring the final exams.
We know education is so important and can’t wait to see where it takes these students!
