Years of Experience
When Bill and Susette Manassero first visited Haiti, they were horrified by the condition of many orphanages. They returned home heartbroken, yet determined to do something about it. The Manasseros took a leap of faith in 2004 and moved to Port Au Prince, Haiti. They opened Child Hope International to make sure children received the care and protection they needed.
Since then, Child Hope International has shared the love of Christ with many vulnerable children and provided them physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional care at the orphanage known as Maison de Lumiere, “The Lighthouse.” Time and again we have adapted our services to meet the needs that arise in the community. Following the 7.0 earthquake in 2010, we opened a school and medical clinic, which were in dire need after many had been destroyed in the earthquake.
Over the years we saw waves of new orphanages, but instead of solving the orphan crisis, they were simply adding to it.
Although an orphanage may seem like a good option for vulnerable children, research shows that living in an orphanage:
- impairs child development
- creates challenges in relationships
- increases the chances of hardships later in life, such as unemployment, homelessness, and trafficking
Even though the children in the orphanage were well cared for, there was one need we couldn’t fill - the sense of belonging which is only experienced in a loving family.
Our Mission
After being confronted with the statistic that 80% of children living in orphanages have a parent or relative living nearby who could care for them if they had the right support, we shifted our services to address issues like poverty and family separation which are at the root of the orphan crisis.
Today we are dedicated to reconciling and reunifying children living in orphanages with their loving families.
Join us in restoring families and restoring hope in Haiti!
Child Hope International stands in the broad tradition of biblical, historical Christianity as expressed in the Scriptures and in statements like the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds. The following are our distinctives:
