This month we hosted our 5th family-based care workshop and trained 19 Haitian social workers.
It was by the grace of God the workshop was able to happen, considering gangs control 60% of Port au Prince and insecurity continues to escalate. Despite the unfolding crisis, we had 50 people register and we had to cap attendance! We believe this is evidence that God has gone before us and is guiding our path!
This workshop followed the same format as the past ones, beginning with high-level topics such as children’s rights and what is family-based care, then getting deeper into the steps involved in reunification and aftercare. The workshop spanned 3 days, culminating in attendees working through a case study.
These workshops, which are part of our Transition Support Services (TSS) program, have two major outcomes:
- Social workers gain more child protection training, making orphanages safer places for children.
- They help orphanages expand their family-based care programming, resulting in more children being reconciled, reunited and supported back into their loving families.
To date, we have trained almost 100 Haitian social workers who are responsible for over 4,500 children.
